Sources of sustainable energy for rural off-grid communities in Bolivia: opportunities, challenges and prospects

Smart Villages organized a workshop on the use of renewable energies for the electrification of rural communities in Bolivia, which was held on April 28, 2016 in La Paz, Bolivia. The workshop aimed to outline new prospects for reducing rural poverty through access and use of sustainable energy sources.

The workshop was set to facilitate the analysis and exchange between the stakeholders from the public sector, civil societies and the private sector engaged in the field of the electrification of off-grid rural communities. Topics discussed include distributed generation and penetration of renewable energy sources in the energy matrix, the productive use of energy in rural communities; monitoring and assessment; clean cooking technologies; solar heating; and entrepreneurship in the rural energy sector. The role of energy in improving the level of community resilience against disasters was discussed as well.

The workshop was preceded by a field visit to the Demonstration Centre for Renewable Energy Technologies of the Catholic University of Bolivia (UCB) on April 27.
