water Access

The challenges we solve

All around the world, access to clean water means life and livelihoods. But many boreholes in remote regions rely on diesel generators to function – this means high costs of diesel and maintenance, logistical challenges of bringing the fuel to site, and low reliability and sustainability.

We replace diesel generators in such systems with clean solar power systems and water supply business models that not only reduce unit costs, but also allow additional businesses – such as flour milling, phone charging, market gardens and even fish farming – to operate alongside the borehole to bring additional revenue and community impact.

Solutions-oriented approach

With out innovative in-house monitoring and control systems for water access technologies, we can remotely monitor system performance, energy generation and volume of water pumped, in order to maintain system operating efficiency, give early warning of technical issues arising, and/or be able to implement energy or volume based charging or repayment systems, if applicable.

We can also apply our technologies and business models to the surveying, drilling and creation of completely new boreholes and community water facilities, including on a market-based commercial repayment basis, where appropriate.

Powering local businesses

Empowering communities

With our innovative commnity-centred designs, a community borehole site can become a local business hub, offering other priority energy and water services, including phone and battery charging, flour milling, cattle dipping, barber shops. This not only delivers additional impact to the community, but adds additional revenue streams and employment prospects to the borehole operators and the community at large.

Smart Villages and our partners also offer bespoke community capacity building in related areas, such as basic solar, water and site maintenance and operations, financial management and record-keeping, business and entrepreneurship skills, to support the long-term sustainability of our water access solutions, and achieve greater community impact.
